Contour Raised Beds: How do they work?

Contour: How to install the worlds best raised bed system.

Contour-raised garden beds are the perfect addition to any garden, formal or informal, edges can bring clarity and distinction to your design. With a plethora of customisations available, how will you use contour in your space? Here we look at all the customisations that you can utilise to make your space truly personalised and individual.

Contour Installation

With Contour, installation is simple and requires minimal tools and experience. Just mark where you want the edge, slide the panels together, and install the posts for a solid ground connection. For full details, download our install guide. To install Contour into a concrete foundation, bolt it down with sleeve anchors to your concrete pad.

Finishes

Contour is available in all our standard finishes. Choosing the right finish can involve many considerations, so we created a separate article that discusses this topic in more detail. What's the best finish for me? Here is an overview:

Corten

This naturally weathering and self-sealing steel is a great option for most gardens. It is maintenance-free and extremely resistant to damage. After a few months in the weather, Corten will form its rusty patina and protective seal which will last a lifetime.

Powder coated colours

We can Powder coat the contour system to any standard RAL colour. We powder coat galvanised steel to ensure longevity and protection from rust. This colour flexibility enables you to match your garden style. Powder-coated edges need periodic cleaning and checks to ensure they stay as good as new! Our powder coatings are UV resistant to ensure the colour remains stable for a lifetime.

Stainless Steel

Some projects are elevated with stainless steel, this brushed finish can be an incredible feature piece for your garden whilst remaining functional. Stainless steel is maintenance-free and just needs periodic cleaning to keep its premium look.

Raised Bed Shapes

Contour is a flexible system. Each 2m panel comes with a strengthener rib that ensures a perfectly straight edge. If you need a curved edge, simply remove the rib and ease the panel to the desired radius. This streamlines the ordering process, as all shapes can be created using the same panels.

How to order Contour

Ordering contour edge is simple:

  1. Decide the height of your raised bed.  Navigate to the correct contour product: Contour Heights
  2. Calculate the meterage of edge you require, and the finish you would like.
  3. Each contour pack comes with a 2m panel so take your required meterage and divide it by 2. This is the Qty you should order.
  4. Consider the below before processing the order via the online payment tool.

What do I need to order extra?

When ordering Contour, you need to consider how many corner pieces you need. These help to form a neat corner or a change in edge direction. Do you need to fix the edge to a concrete foundation? You may need to order the ground fixing kit.  If the ground conditions are unstable, you may want to order the extender post. This is a 1.5m or 1m post that you can use for extra edge stability.

Delivery

Most systems are stocked so delivery can be with you in 2 working days. Jobs made to order can be delivered within 4 weeks. Because our systems are standardised there is no time needed for design.

Why use GEO?

We are often told by landscapers that they use their local fabricator to make their steel edges. Here are the for and against:

For:

  • A local fabricator may be able to assist with installation on-site
  • They are nearby so factory visits are easier
  • A fabricator would be more willing to take on bespoke work

Against:

  • A local fabricator will not have a tried and tested method to achieve raised beds
  • A standardised system is often more cost-effective
  • GEO can offer 2-day delivery on most systems

Is GEO for me?

Here are 2 instances where we may not be the best solution for you:

  1. If your project is cost-driven. – if there is a substantial focus on cost, there are cheaper ways to achieve a raised bed. Discussed in more detail here.
  2. If your project is very bespoke. We only take on a limited number of bespoke projects per year. Get in touch to see if we can assist. (if not, we will point you in the right direction!)
